Qld: Cane farmers at risk from federal reef laws, Beattie

Queensland Premier PETER BEATTIE says federal Environment Minister ROBERT HILL wants
to push cane farmers off the land with his new anti-pollution plans.

He says hundreds of the state's cane farmers will be sent broke by proposed federal
laws to reduce pollution on the Great Barrier Reef.

Senator HILL has proposed the laws to restrict waste flowing onto the reef in a bid
to cut down on poorly-regulated aquaculture projects.

But Mr BEATTIE has called on Prime Minister JOHN HOWARD to sack Senator HILL and replace
him with a minister more interested in the environment than in picking fights with state
governments.
