Lebanon sending Hariri files to tribunal

Lebanese authorities have begun shipping records of their investigation into the assassination of former Prime Minister Rafik Hariri to a Netherlands-based tribunal prosecuting the suspected killers.

The state news agency says Judge Saqr Saqr also ordered Wednesday that four pro-Syrian generals detained on suspicion of involvement in the 2005 assassination remain in jail pending a decision on their fate by the U.N.-backed tribunal.

A judge at the tribunal has formally requested that Lebanese authorities turn over the documents, bringing the tribunal a step closer to seeking custody of the generals who have not been formally charged.

The generals led the police, intelligence service and an elite army unit at the time of the bombing.
